Re;

Heinrich Carl Kosbab
I
apologize for the fact that I so late announce myself only again. But the change
of year took me up vocationally very much, so that I had very few time.
I assigned in the meantime my parents to collect all information which is
available regarding Pommern and environment. As soon as I have more over it, I
announce myself immediately.
Yesterday I received one on my agency eMail from a Gerd Kosbab from the
proximity of new cathedral. Gerd Kosbab becomes in this year 55 years old. It
looks likewise for well-known addresses of our families.
So e.g. Albert Heinrich Carl Kosbab, geb. 12,03,1876 in beautiful forest, set
Stolp as well as of its father Theodor Kosbab, resident in Stolp and its
nut/mother Albertine Geik.
If I have closer information, I announce myself again. Many greetings to it and
your family

My
name is Bruce Anthony Kosbab and I currently live in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin
(a suburb of Milwaukee). I came across your site and it interested me. My
grandparents were Aggie and Frederick Paul Kosbab. My father, Fritz Paul
Kosbab, had mentioned that they had come from Pommern. My father was born in
Bonduel, Wisconsin and had 3 brothers (Bill, Rudolph, and Julius) and 3
sisters (Emma, Minnie, and Martha). Bill lived in Green Bay, but passed away
some years ago. Julius stayed in Bonduel and passed away about 15 years ago.
Rudolph and the sisters lived in Milwaukee. Rudolph and Minnie are the only
ones still living. My father was born June 22, 1912 and passed away March 13,
1991. He retired in Milwaukee in 1976 and moved to Shawano, Wisconsin where
he sent his last years. If you have any more questions please e-mail me at
the following address:

P.S. I was born to Fritz and Charlotte Kosbab in Milwaukee on January 20,
1953.

For
your information. Harold Karl Kosbab (10/21/01) and Flora Rella Broehm
(10/16/08) (both deceased) were married on 09/22/1927. They had two
children, my mother, Marion Anna Kosbab (04/16/28-10/01/84) and my uncle
Donald Kosbab (still living). I don't know much about the Broehms - I know
that quite a few of Floras siblings lived in the Appleton, WI area. I only
recall Elden Broehm and Butch Broehm, although I remember as a child going
to see grandma's brothers and sisters who lived on farms in Outagamie Co.

Excerpt
from Marcia Leser Hupp, Sandusky,
Ohio, U.S.A.
I've
been researching a Kosbab family who lived in Toledo,
Ohio.
Charles (Carl) Kosbab was about the same age
as my great grandfather, Edward Kosbab, so I thought
perhaps they could have been brothers or cousins. After much searching of
obituaries, census, etc., Theodor Kosbab was listed
as being from Hesse, Germany.
A
couple of months ago I joined Pommern-L. I decided to take a stab at
posting a query late last night. Within 15 minutes or so, Karl Sup, from
Mesa, Arizona e-mailed me. He feels that my Edward Kosbab is probably a
cousin to his ancestor, Frederick, from Hebrondamnitz,
Kreis Stolp, Hinter Pommern. He will check all of his records for this
town and e-mail me in a day or two to let me know what he discovered
I
received an e-mail from Gerd Kosbab. He will e-mail me again after
checking at the local LDS. This is all getting quite exciting. I
have searched for the Geman birth place of my Kosbab's for around 20 years!
A
number of interesting points here. We now have 2 more towns
to add to the growing list. Plus that good ol' franking furter himself
Gerd has popped up again. What would we do without him.

Henry
Kosbab met Maud Mary Westlake while she was
visiting Hampton Court one fine summers day, and fell in love with him. He
was in army uniform, so what war is it connected with? It would have been
around 1897-1899.
Does
anyone recognise the army uniform worn by Henry
Kosbab and can tell us any more about it?
Henry
Kosbab and his brother JACK were said to have been in the trenches in France
together and Jack suffered from frost bite (foot rot) Who was JACK? No
brother that we know of was named Jack. Could Otto Junior have been nicknamed
Jack?
Another
anomaly here is... If Henry Kosbab was born in Germany and migrated as a child
to England, could he have served in the British Army?
Possibly
Otto Kosbab served in WW1 with the Australian Army and suffered from terrible
mustard gas burns.
BIRTH
CERTIFICATE
We
have never been able to locate the birth certificate or place of birth of Henry
Kosbab. We do not know if he was born in England or
possible Germany. There are some who think
it is odd that the first 2 children of Otto and Louise Kosbab basically had the
same Christian name, Henry and Henrietta. Another anomaly here is that
Henrietta's birth certificate gives her father as Henry Kosbab not Otto.

CHRISTIAN
NAMES
Is
it true that in Germany (way back when) that the boys were given three (3)
names, and that they may have been known or used by all three? The parent
using one name, the siblings another and friends/grand parents the third name?
Is
it true that the first born son generally took the Christian name of the
father? If this is the case, would there be any explanation why the last
child was given the fathers name... Otto?

Kosbab Marriage Certificate
The
registrar's of Wilhelmshaven has sent me the marriage document of my grandfather
Albert Kosbab. He was born in Schönwalde, Kreis Stolp. In
germany civil registries only reach up to 1874. So for the next steps, we
have to go to Polland, to the registry of the church.

Karin,
Thank you for such a great website! You are doing such wonderful work! I am
searching for the surname Kosbab. Edward Kosbab was
born in 1857 in Hinter Pommern, Germany. His wife, Augusta
Gewanzki, Genofske, Genowski
(not certain of spelling) was also born around 1857 in Hinter Pommern. Edward
had 2 brothers and 1 sister (possibly more). Edward and Augusta were married
about 1875 in Hinter Pommern. Edward came to Sandusky,
Ohio, U.S.A in 1878 and Augusta came in 1881. Edward's brothers, August and Albert
Kosbab stayed in Hinter Pommern. Edward's sister, Henrietta
Kosbab, married Wilhelm Nutzki, and also
settled in Sandusky, Ohio, U.S.A. Would like to learn what town in Hinter
Pommern the Kosbab family came from. It is possible they came from the area,
formerly known as Stolp, Germany, but I have found
no evidence of the exact name of the town. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

EAST END NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE was
established in Cleveland in 1907 (inc. 1911) by Hedwig
and Anna Kosbab, daughters of Josip Kosbab, a Hungarian
immigrant. Located at 2749 Woodhill Rd., the settlement has served the
BUCKEYE-WOODLAND-Woodhill community. Initially, the Kosbabs offered sewing and
cooking classes for neighbors, but soon created a formal organization to meet
the needs of HUNGARIANS, ITALIANS, and other Southern European immigrants moving
to the area. The first Board of Trustees of the East End Neighborhood House
included SAMUEL MATHER, ROLLIN WHITE, and ORIS P. VAN SWERINGEN. By Hedwig's
death in 1922, the settlement had served nearly 70,000 people with classes,
clubs, and recreational programs. During World War II, the settlement sponsored
scrap drives and blood donations, as well as a controversial relocation program
for Japanese-Americans within its neighborhood in 1944.

Kosbab
My
father's father, John Herman Bartz, and Mary's
father's father, Paul Bernhard Bartz, were two of the sons of Wilhelm Bartz and
Johanna Kosbab. The family immigrated to northern Wisconsin in about 1872 via
Hamburg from a place called Bandsekow (don't know how that is/was spelled in
German/Polish), Kreis Stolp in Pomern. Stolp is one of the small cities around
Stettin.
Johanna
was born in about 1846 and died 3/25/1931 in Hayes, Wisconsin.
Johanna's
family had already settled in the Shawano area, and one of her brothers, Theodor
(b. 11/1835), sent them the tickets for the ship.
Johanna's
sister, Henrietta (b. 3/1858), married Edward
Suring. The 1920 Census of the U.S. - Wisconsin, Ocotno County, says that she
immigrated in 1872.
Both
of Johanna's parents also immigrated and were living in the Shawano area in 1880
- the family is listed in the 1880 census and one of Wilhelm and Johanna's other
children (Wilhem - "Uncle Willy") was living with one of the Kosbab
families at the time of that census.
I
can't remember what her father's name was - her mother's name was Sarah, and I
was always told that her maiden name was "Kuschel".

We
have no birth or death certificate of Wm Westlake
(Maud Mary Westlakes father). The 1881 Census says he was born in Horrabridge,
although this could be Stampford Spiney.
The registrar could only find a William Westlake
for 1850 born in Lynford with parents Wm Westlake and Maria
Worden.
A
Wm Westlake was christened in Horrabridge in 1853 to
parents Wm Westlake (blacksmith -born Buckland Monachorum)
and Ann Gilbert (born St Austell). It is
believed he died during the second world war.
On
his marriage certificate he gives his fathers and his own occupation as
Smith. The two witnesses were William and Edward Gilbert
possible brothers of Ann Gilbert. A William Gilbert with the right age was
located in St Austell.
On
Maud Mary's birth certificate, her father (Wm) is a Blacksmith but in the 1881
Census he was a Railway Labourer.

During the Klondike gold rush 2 brothers of Maud Mary
Westlake went to Canada. One possibly died on the voyage.

HINCHEN
Louise
The
1891 Census states Louise Hinchen came from Berlin,
Germany. We have no other proof or evidence to support this? Any
clues?
Could
Louise Hinchen originally been something else like Kinchen... ? (see next topic)
Top
HÜNCHEN
Louise
According
to Charlie Kosbab the surname of Louise was HÜNCHEN with
one of those little things above the Ü.
What
we know about the word Hunchen:
Hunchen is a small bird in Austrian,
Hunchen is also a fish: HUNCHEN
THE FISH
Hunchen is also a christian name: (oh dear)
The
following links were returned when searching for the word Hunchen but I cannot
locate the name in any of the files. It is now my
opinion that Hunchen was not Loiusa's real surname. It may have been
her original middle or christian name but my gut feeling is due to the lack of
evidence.

Message: The first Westlakes that I've found to come over from Devonshire
England Was Samuel b.1699,and wife Anne(Burrough's)Westlake.
Samuel's father was Albert b.1675.
Alberts father was Samuel b.1650 in Devon.
He had another son named George.b.1680.
I have loads of descendant info on these Westlakes, but havent'yet found much
about life in Devon, which I have a passion to know. So If we can help each

Message: I really found your response to be very interesting "I have loads
of descendant info on these Westlakes". I am fairly new to the Westlake
genealogy and am piecing together the lineage but I have one stumbling block.
On my family we have a Henry Pelcher Westlake who was b. 7/31/1831 Fayette Co.,
W. Va., d. 5/1899 Mexico City, Mexico and who m. Mary Lindsay Todd b. 4/2/1835
Quebec, Canada dn d. 6/171903 Weed, N.M.
They had Mary Margardt b. 1859, George Bracee b. 5/4/1861, Charles Thomas b.
1864, Edith b. 1866, and Henry Lindsay b. 1869.
My problem is, who is Henry's parents? In all the stuff that I have collected
sofar, I can't find him anyway. My wife ties directly through the George Bracee
b. 1861 lineage. Since "I have loads of descendant info on these Westlakes",
I was wondering, can you place him anywhere? Thanks...

Rosser
- Origin of the name
The name Rogier
was introduced into England by followers of William the Conqueror and the name
Roger developed as a surname among the English, French, Catalan, and Low
Germans. Variations include Rodgier, Rogger (English); Rodger (Scottish); Rosser
(Wales); Rogier, Rogez (French); Rogger, Rottger, Rottcher, Rodinger (Low
German). Numerous cognate forms exist, as do patronymics, which include Rodgers,
Rogers, Rogerson, Rodgerson , and many others.
Rogers :
English/French Patronymic name from the given name Roger which was brought to
England by the Normans as Rogier. Its elements are hrod = renown + geri = spear,
or `reknowned spearman.' Requested by Darryl Rogers
Ross is an
English and Scots place name from a place near Caen in Normandy, which was the
original home of the family ‘de Ros’ who were located in Kent by the year
1130. Some names have more than one origin depending on the family, and Ross is
one of those. Occasionally, it comes from a Gaelic word ros that meant ‘promontory’
or ‘upland’ and there were several locales named with this meaning in mind.
Also, somes Ross families are descended from an ancestor who bore the Germanic
given name Rozzo, which meant ‘reknown’ in its original sense. Finally, the
German breeder or keeper of horses was sometimes called Ross, from the Southern
German word ross = horse, or the man who lived at the house displaying the sign
of the horse might also come to bear this name. Requested by Drew Ross
The answer would
appear to be that it is definitely Welsh. When I was young I was told that it
was Scottish-Gaelic. Later I read that it was Welsh. I have since traveled in
both Wales and Scotland and done a "phone book check". There are NO
Rossers in Scotland outside of major cities such as Edinburgh, and hardly any
there, although "Ross" is definitely Scottish. However in
Southern, especially Southwestern (but not at all in Northern) Wales there are
lots and lots of Rossers in the phone book. Supposedly the name means
"spear bearer" and there is a coat of arms in Wales.
I think that the
ultimate origin is Ireland. There were invasions of Wales from Ireland at the
end of the Roman Empire period, and the southeast corner of Ireland is called
"Rosslare". In the Book of Ballymote about the Irish
ogham alphabet system, the Tree of Ross was the yew tree, from which
poison-tipped spears were made. Also, as in Russian, in Arabic, "ras"
means "head" or "first". There is a definite Hamitic input
in the Welsh language, probably dating to trade with Phoenicia during the period
of the building of Stonehenge.

Dear Brian
Kosbab,
I was very surprised, if I became a eMail as my own name. I was also very
happy to find more families with the name "Kosbab", too. I had
buy about 2 years ago a book at following address:
- Numa Corporation
- Div. Numa Co. Ltd.
- 3867 Ira Road
- Bath, Ohio 44210 USA.
It's a family worldbook. In the world exist over 1993 families/address with our
name. Knut Kosbab
Pommern
Hallo
Brian There is no Bandeskow in Kreis Stolp/ Pommern.
There are two villages south of Schwerin named Bandekow, but that's not Pommern;-(
Probebly this tiny little village is named Bandsechow. My friend is a specialist
for Pommern and he has got a list of all places in Pommern including numbers of
families and inhabitants. So Bandsechow was the only choise, which came near to
Bandeskow. He gave me that information about Bandsechow: It is
placed near Stolp and Lauenburg/Pommern. It has had 78 Families and about 300
inhabitants.( Till 1945) I prepared a little map, so you can see the approximate
position. On monday i'll take contact to the registrar's of
Bremerhaven, former Heppens, weither they got still the proof's of my
grandfather Albert Hinrich Carl. I hope, I get on
forwards. ys geko

"Is this our

Regarding
the name Kusibab - on checking some 8 pages on Yahoo it would appear that of
the total that comes up for Kosibab they are all practically all related to two
people - them there dancers in the good ol US of A.
There was this on
Kusibab though

I think that it
is quite likely the name is Kosbab, and that they migrated to Poland and this is
a Polish rendering or mis-spelling of the Kosbab name. I found Debica on my old
Atlas, but not Sepnica, nor could I find it in the older or the lastest Atlas,
although I found an article on the Web, (In Polish of course) with a mention of
it. Something to do with Wine and/or vinyards. Unfortunately Alta Vista does not
have a translation program for Polish to English!
Hodges
not Hodgers
Hi, I,m new to
this but am searching the areas you mentioned for the Hodges
families. They are many and lived in Flushing, Budock, Mylor and Falmouth
including surrounding villages. I,m particularly looking for Sydney Hodges
who married Emma Prior -late 19th century in the Mylor area.
Any data or leads/links to follow would be greatly appreciated
Thank you
Fiona Turner (UK)
Flushing comes up
again. That's the town the couple in Budock told me I'd find the Hodgers, but I
note that our Fiona has it as Hodges not Hodgers. May be the same
though. Once I have my 1881 Census back on computer I will check for her.

What
you do with LDS Microfilm numbers
Find your nearest
LDS (Latter Day Saints - Mormons) Research Centre. Ring them and ask them
to obtain the film quoting the relevant LDS number (Microfilm 1960620 Marriages-Sepnica,
Poland), for which they will very kindly charge you money, about £2.75.
They will then request the LDS microfilm from either their HQ here or in Utah.
When it arrives they notify you and you have around about one month in which to
get to the research centre (which you have to book) in order to view the film.
You can then ask for photo copies. Sometimes they person who is in charge of the
very special photo copying machine (they cost a whopping £7000 each, and no
that's not a mistake) is not there. They are very helpful people and they more
than willing to guide you.

Tackles Wind
I did not realise
that there were tests being done on wind energy (Give me bakebeans and I will
show 'em energy)...
Der Spiegel Tackles Wind
Klaus Kaiser has posted the text and pages from a recent Der Spiegel article
that examines wind energy in Germany. The article has caused something of a stir
in Germany and Klaus has posted a reply. The text of both is in German--and it's
not school book German either--but you can get some idea of it by identifying
the cognates. For example "Muhlen Monstern" and "visuellen
Emissionen" give you a good idea of the author's topics. The article's deck
or summary asks whether the wind turbines in Germany are the beginning of a
green utopia or the Republic is wasting its money
and our Kosbab thinks...
Painter Thomas Kosbab lives in Wasserkoog. Poplars and elms border his cottage.
The sky curves high an blue; the sea murmurs from afar. A scene like a Nolde
painting. And now? White rotors saw up the air above Eidestedt (a peninsula
jutting into the North Sea from Schleswig-Holstien). "What an
offense," says the artist, "the landscape is spoiled."
