Sidwell VINCENT was born 20 April 1851, in Illogan, Cornwall. She and William married at Tuckingmill Parish Church, on 10 August 1873. and had their first child William Charles WESTLAKE at Redriver, Cornwall in 1875.
Sidwell and William later moved to Horrabridge in Devon, where their second child Maud Mary was born on 8th February 1878.
Sadly Sidwell died shortly after my grandmother Maud was born in 1878. I haven’t found where she was buried yet, but I will keep searching.
Mary Ann HODGERS was Sidwell’s mother. Thanks to Kindred Konnections we found her and her children Charles (1848/49), Sidwell (1851), William J (1853/54) and James H, 1859/60) in the 1871 Census. Mary Ann’s age is given as 53 which would give a birth year of 1817/18. Mary was born in Budock, Cornwall.
I have found a Mary Ann ODGERS baptised on the 21 December 1817 in Budock, Cornwall. So, together with the Cornish dropped ‘H’ and the questionable literacy of the cleric, it is possible that this is my Great Great Grandma. If so, then her parents were:
John ODGERS of Budock, and Elizabeth (probably) HARDWICKE. This has yet to be confirm.
Until today, the 15 February 2001 I had been unable to locate any information on John VINCENT apart from this entry in the 1851 Census for Illogan kindly supplied by Sandy of Illogan Parish Research Site.
The LDS film number for the 1851 Illogan census is: #221069 from INDEX: folio #377:
VINCENT…
William, 64 Ann, 60 James, 19
John 36, Mary A 34, Ann 8, Elizabeth 6, Jane 4, Charles 2.
Enter Valerie. this lovely lady not only looked up John VINCENT in a 1866 Trade Directory, where she found he was a Farmer in Camborne, she then went out of her way to check the 1851 Census on Film, and discovered that the above family looked even more like mine,
Folio 377 at somewhere near Tuckingmill
At house 72
John Vincent – 36 copper miner born Camborne
Mary A – 34 born Budock
Ann -8 born Camborne
Elizabeth – 6 born Camborne
Jane 4 – born Illogan
Charles – 2 born Illogan
This lady has an abundance of kindness, because today I received an email from her. She had gone even further in her help, and looked them up in the 1861 Census and sent me this:
At folio 68 page 6 at Tehidy Mill,( I think) next to Red River
John Vincent – 46 Farmer of 25 acres b Camborne
Mary Ann – 44 farmer’s wife b Redruth *
Ann – 18 homework b Camborne
Elizabeth – 16 work at mine, b Camborne
Jane – 14 work at mine b Illogan
Charles – 12 b Illogan
Sidwell – 10 sch b Illogan My Greatgrandmother
William J – 8 sch b Illogan
James H – 2 b Illogan
This confirms them as my family. *This should be Budock, and may well be a Transcriber error, especially if the copy and or enumerator’s writing was poor. It may well be that William and Ann VINCENT are John’s parents, in both Census they lived not far from Mary and John, but until I have a marriage certificate they cannot be added as relations.
John is not with Mary and her children on the 1871 Census, and her marrital status is given as widow, although he is not described as deceased on Sidwell’s marriage certificate in 1873! On this Census, Mary is described as a Farmer of 20 Acres in Illogan, with William CHEGWIDDEN born Tavistock, Devon as an indentured lad, and William ROBERTS born Breage, Cornwall, as a lodger.
Tavistock is not far from Horrabridge, and Breage is next door to Budock.
Charles and his wife Jane JENKIN also appear to have used family Surnames and those of her family in their children’s names:
Charles VINCENT (born c.1848 in Illogan) married Jane JENKIN/JENKYN father Henery JENKIN (born c.1851 in Illogan) c.1872. They had the following children:
Jane (born c 1873 died c.1873) married James BIDDICK (not my information)
John Charles (born c. 1875) married Mabel
William Arthur (born c. 1877)
Henry Jenkin (born c. 1878) married Dorothy (VINCENT?)
Fred (born c. 1879 died 8 Feb 1927 in Deluth, MN, USA) not sure where Fred
comes into the naming system.
Thomas (born c. 1884 died c. 1957) married Lilla TINMAN
